Scooter Hinge - In the news
"Scooterhinge," Another Word for Nostalgia From Carbon Valley Consumer Report - Nov 2004by Brigitta Hebdon What do you do if you collect things, LOTS of things and some BIG things, and you need a place to put them? Well, if you're Stan Luebbers you open a Nostalgic Rental Hall. Scooterhinge is one part museum combined with one part event center. It is one amazing place! Stan owns thirty classic motorcycles; many have been fully restored. Even if you're not a biker, it's a pretty impressive collection. The truly amazing thing is that most of Stan's collection was purchased from original owners in the Denver/Longmont area. In addition to Stan's motorcycles, Scooterhinge is adorned from floor to ceiling with antiques of all shapes and sizes - there is even an antique, fully plumbed, outhouse! Every piece has a story and Stan knows the history behind each one. Many are family originals, such as his grandmother's high school graduation dress (c.1937). He also has his mother's 1961 wedding dress and her old cheerleading uniform. Scooterhinge is also home to many collectible dolls. It seems odd that a motorcycle enthusiast would also collect dolls. However, the story behind the dolls? Also, remarkable. Stan knew an elderly woman that he had purchased antiques from. He was helping her move some heavy items in her home when he stumbled upon a small, old box. He asked her what it was and she replied they were her baby clothes from the turn of the 20th century. He asked his friend if she'd be interested in selling him the clothes and she gifted them to him. Hence, he needed a way to display them. Solution - Dolls. When Stan was a toddler in Eastern Colorado his mother used to take him to an old general store with her to do her shopping. While there, the two would always stop at the soda fountain for a drink. Recently that old store was demolished. Today, Stan owns that soda fountain and that piece of his family history and, like all his prized relics, it lives at Scooterhinge. There is even a Bear trophy that was shot in 1959 by Longmont resident, "Big John." Stan can tell you all about Big John because when Stan purchases his antiques, he really wants to know the stories that accompany his treasures. Today, Scooterhinge, located on Main Street in Mead, is a treasure itself. It's a rental hall with a capacity of 280. Open for the last two years, Scooterhinge has hosted weddings, graduation parties, anniversary dinners, and an array of other events. There is a kitchen, bar, and stage but food, drinks, and rock-n-roll are not provided. If you are planning an event of any kind, and you want less formality, more fun, I highly recommend Scooterhinge. Stan lovingly claims that, unlike his more formal competitors, it's a blue-collar rental hall. Scooterhinge rents for an affordable $150/hour. A deposit of $250 is required to hold your date and the remaining balance is due in full two weeks prior to the date. Stan wants to work with people so he will take installments prior to the 2-week deadline. Sort of like "party layaway"! There is still some availability through the Holidays. Stan is currently taking reservations for next year also. Scooterhinge can be reached at 970-535-9823 or www.scooterhinge.com. | |
